Combined Defense Service Exam is conducted by the UPSC for selecting eligible candidates in IMA, INA, AFA and OTA courses. Both male and females can apply for the programme. Those who clear the examination can get admissions in any of the courses. The test is usually held in the February and August months annually.

Structure and Pattern of the CDSE

The question pattern for the exam comprises of objective type questions. The examination question paper consists of questions on English and General Awareness. For the IMA, AFA and INA, questions on elementary Maths will also be included. The exam carries 300 marks except OTA test, which is for 200 marks.

Qualification Criteria for the CDSE

The qualification criterion for applying for the examination is different for different programes. In order to apply for the IMA & OTA programmes, the candidates should be graduates from any disciplines, but should be from a recognized University. The students are required to be graduates in either Physics or Mathematics or BE / B.Tech in Engineering to apply for the courses in Naval or Air Force Academy. Aspirants who are appearing for the final year of qualifying exam are also eligible. The candidates should not be below the age of 19 years. The upper age limit for applying the military course is 24 years, naval 22 years, Air force 23 years and Officers’ training course is 25 years. In addition to the above requirements, the aspirants need to be physically fit in terms of the Physical Standards.
